A short story about listening.
I laid facedown on her bedroom floor. She sat on the edge of her bed with her arms crossed.
We hadn’t said anything to each other for an hour.
She just kept looking at the back of my head.
“I have to go to work soon.” She said to the back of my head.
I didn’t say anything in response. I had said enough an hour ago.
“So that’s it?” She asked the back of my head.
I imagined if I laid there long enough, I would eventually dissolve through the floor. Then into the ground and then through Earth. Then back up through the ground on the other side of Earth. Then through the floor of some other girl’s home in whatever country was on the other side of Earth from where I was.
If I dissolved into the other girl’s place on the other side of Earth, would I be facing down or facing up?
“Can you please go now.” She said to the back of my head.
“I’m trying.” I said to her.
